Ten people have been arrested and some businesses have been fined thousands of rands at the Pietermaritzburg CBD.
This follows joint business operations in the CBD, led by Economic Development MEC Ravi Pillay, Umsunduzi mayor Mzi Thebolla and Community safety MEC Bheki Ntuli.
The raid was part of government’s intensified efforts to enforce and encourage compliance with COVID-19 regulations.
Pillay says they saw many businesses operating without liquor license and also discovered many foreign nationals that are undocumented running unregistered businesses.
He adds that criminal charges will be brought to those not complying.
Meanwhile mayor Thebolla says this is not to punish these businesses.
