12 people have been killed in a crash between a fuel tanker and a minibus taxi on the R33 near Greytown in the midlands.
Paramedics allege that a taxi collided with a truck carrying diesel and petrol.
The road is currently closed as a result of an oil spill.
KZN Emergency Medical Service spokesperson, Robert McKenzie, says the cause of the collision is not yet known.
He says two other people have been treated after sustaining critical injuries.
