The KZN Department of Education says it is racing against time to fill over four-thousand vacant teacher posts.

The rush to fill these posts follows the commencement of the 2021 academic year, last week.

Mshengu says its important to ensure that learners have enough teachers for every subject offered at school, so they achieve the required resuls.

The province achieved the fourth highest Matric results for 2020 with a 77.6% pass rate, which was a decline from 81.3% in the previous year.

Education MEC Kwazi Mshengu says 253 posts were left vacant after teachers succumbed to COVID-19-related complications.

Some of the vacancies are as a result of teachers retiring while others have been medically boarded for different reasons.
