The long-awaited allocation of the 5G spectrum is set to get underway from today.

The Independent Communication Authority of South Africa’s (ICASA) opt-in auction will begin with six licensed telecommunications operators participating in the process.

They are mainly Telkom, Vodacom, MTN, Cell C, Liquid Intelligent Technologies, and Rain.

5G is the fifth-generation technology standard for broadband cellular networks, which cellular phone companies began deploying worldwide in 2019, and is the planned successor to the 4G networks which provide connectivity to most current cellphones.

Network operators are able to use certain radio frequencies they have licensed from governments through spectrum auctions. Governments then auction off frequency licenses to network operators as the bands become available.

The main round of bidding will take place on Thursday, with Tech Central editor, Duncan Macloud, saying a looming court battle could still derail the allocation of the much-needed network capacity to operators.
