The discovery of new chemical compounds, made by researchers at the University of Pretoria, could be the answer to treating and eliminating malaria.

The discovery involved identifying substances able to kill several stages of the deadly human malaria parasite.

The head of the university’s Institute for Sustainable Malaria Control, Lyn-Marie Birkholtz, says the first compound is currently used against tuberculosis and the second is used as an anti-cancer medication.

She says both show potential to be developed as antimalarials.
