A Slight Decrease in Food Prices

The average cost of the Household Food Basket has declined by R61, to R4137 compared to last month.
This is according to the Pietermaritzburg Economic Justice & Dignity Group’s May 2021 Household Affordability Index.
The group tracks monthly food price data from 44 supermarkets and 30 butcheries, in Durban, Pietermaritzburg, Johannesburg and Cape Town.
Programme Coordinator, Mervyn Abrahams, says while the decrease is noted the current cost of living will mean hard times for South Africans as the year progresses.
