Transport Minister, Fikile Mbalula, has appointed Zolani Matthews as the new Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (PRASA), Group Chief Executive Officer.
Mbalula announced this during a media briefing at the Langa Train Station this morning, in Cape Town.
This follows PRASA experiencing many challenges that became pronounced in 2015/16, including irregular expenditure which stood at R4.1billion, alongside fruitless and wasteful expenditure of R541 million.
“The prevalence of crime in our rail environment has reached alarming levels. Theft and vandalism of critical infrastructure in our railways not only place the lives and livelihoods of those who rely on trains in danger, but also have dire consequences on the economy,”says Mbalula.
Mbalula adds that Matthews is a seasoned professional, with a robust understanding of international and domestic business strategy.
Meanwhile, the newly appointed CEO has outlined his strategic aims for the agency.
Matthews says PRASA aims to improve the rail network and organisational capacity and are also committed to good governance.
