A woman who is believed to be the mother of a new-born baby that was found in a storm-water drain pipe has been arrested.

The baby girl was found alive last week in Newlands East, north of Durban.

Rescuers worked for hours rescuing the baby.

Police spokesperson, Thembeka Mbhele, says the 27-year old is currently in hospital under police guard and she will be charged accordingly.

“The 27-year-old woman has been arrested. She is suspected to have dumped her new born baby in a storm water drain pipe in Newlands last week. She was arrested while she was in hospital, right now she is still in hospital in a stable condition. She will appear in court soon,” says Gwala.
