Action SA President, Herman Mashaba, says South Africa is losing the battle against COVID-19 while thousands of qualified doctors, nurses, and medical interns sit at home, unemployed.

Mashaba says this as the country’s healthcare system is currently overwhelmed with a high number of COVID-19 patients and a shortage of healthcare workers.

“Hundreds of qualified and experienced local medical professionals sit at home ready to serve on the frontline to save lives, but 40 000 posts remain frozen, or unfilled because of Employment Equity policies,” says Mashaba.

He adds that the party has created a petition calling on government to hire unemployed medical professionals.
