ActionSA has announced that it has written to the ANC Task Team negotiating the passage of the 2025/2026 budget to inform them that it will not support the proposed budget.
The party’s decision centres on the government’s failure to consult with ActionSA during the development of the budget, a key issue that the party believes undermines democratic processes and effective governance.
ActionSA’s National Chairperson, Michael Beaumont, stated that the proposed increases in both value-added tax (VAT) and income tax cannot be supported, as the government has not addressed its own substantial waste and inefficiency. The party has consistently called for greater fiscal discipline and for the government to focus on reducing wasteful expenditure before burdening taxpayers with further tax hikes.
The proposed tax hikes come at a time when South Africa is grappling with a sluggish economic recovery and high unemployment rates. Beaumont added that ActionSA believes the government must take a more balanced approach, addressing corruption, inefficiency, and excessive public spending before considering further increases in taxes.
ActionSA also raised concerns about the government’s prioritisation of certain sectors and projects at the expense of critical public services like healthcare and education. The party is calling for a more transparent and inclusive budget process moving forward.
