Additional Soldiers on their Way

Another 25 000 South African National Defence Force (SANDF) members will be deployed to KZN and Gauteng to help beef up security and assist police in the efforts to restore order within communities and city centres.

The continued looting and turmoil in the two provinces has led to thousands of jobs being lost, with many business centres destroyed, forcing some places to close permanently.

Defence Minister Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula says the proposal to increase the number of SANDF members will be submitted for approval.

The minister has told Parliament’s Joint Standing Committee on Defence that there is a possibility that this number will may increase further.
