AfriForum says government will not win the fight against the Coronavirus pandemic because it is looking for the wrong solutions to a medical challenge.
This comes after President Cyril Ramaphosa’s address last night, stating that the country will remain on adjusted lockdown alert level three.
In his address, Ramaphosa said government is in the process of procuring vaccines through three channels – through the World Health Organisation’s COVAX facility, the African Union’s vaccine initiative and through direct engagements with vaccine manufacturers.
Meanwhile, AfriForum’s Head of Policy and Action, Ernst Roets, says its case together with Solidarity against government over the preconceived monopoly on the purchase and distribution of Covid-19 vaccines is now of paramount importance.
“This action aims to ensure that people who wish to get the vaccine, aren’t prevented from doing so as a result of mismanagement and corruption,” says Roets.
He adds that one would expect a responsible reaction to the pandemic – but the government’s misuse of the virus to obstruct citizens’ basic rights is inexcusable.
