The National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD) has disregarded news circulating on social media claiming that typhoid fever bacteria is in municipal water.

The NICD’s Head of the Centre for Enteric Diseases, Juno Thomas, says the posts are spreading false information that causes panic.

Thomas says there is no evidence that recent cases of typhoid fever are linked to contaminated municipal water in any part of the country.

She says people could prevent infection from typhoid fever by practicing good hand hygiene and consuming safe drinking water.
