Economist Dante Mashile says it is vital that the government implements a Basic Income Grant, to ensure the poor are not left out in the cold.

Mashile says South Africa’s economy has been dealt a major blow by the Covid-19 pandemic, adding that citizens can use a little boost from the government.

A panel of economic advisers appointed by President Cyril Ramaphosa seems to be divided over whether the country should implement this basic income grant.

A report by the panel has been leaked, and shows strong support for the grant in the country.

Mashile says if Ramaphosa approves this, he will in fact be stimulating the country’s economy as recipients will use the money to invest in small businesses and take care of their families better.
