The issue of expired drivers licences due to the Transport department’s inability to issue renewals, has become an even bigger problem for most drivers as insurers are also refusing to cover damages to their vehicles.
The Ombud for short-term insurance has advised drivers to inform their insurers if they have not been able to renew expired licence cards.
Most car insurance policies are known to not cover unlicensed drivers.
In the case of the department’s current inability to issue renewed licences, Ombud Thasnim Dawood says it is advisable for motorists to check if this will have any impact on future claims.
She says drivers should be able to prove that they have made some attempt to renew their licence cards, but failed as a result of the department’s current backlog.
