The Assembly of the Unemployed’s Siyabulela Mama says the government needs to look at providing a permanent secured above poverty line basic income grant as a way to sustain the country’s unemployed.

He was weighing on President Cyril Ramaphosa’s announcement that the Presidential Employment Stimulus Programme has reached the milestone of a million participants, since its inception.

South Africa’s unemployment rate decreased by 1.4 percentage points to 44.1 % in Q2.

Mama says while he notes the decline, he says the number of unemployed people is still too high.
