At least 14 police officials have died of the coronavirus

At least 1685 police members have tested positive for Covid-19 to date, with 14 who have died.

Lirandzu Thema, speaking on behalf of Police minister, Bheki Cele, says in the Eastern Cape, 186 members contracted the virus, 119 in Gauteng and 53 in KwaZulu-Natal.

Almost 10 000 members stationed around the country have tested negative for Covid-19.

Meanwhile the Western Cape is battling with 11 657 active cases of the virus.

The province’s total stands 40 232 confirmed cases, of which more than 27 000 patients have recovered.

1048 people in the province have succumbed to the virus.

Nationally, there have been 57 more coronavirus deaths and 4300 new infections.

South Africa’s known death toll now stands at 1480.

Gauteng has just over 11 000 cases and the Eastern Cape, just more than 10 000.
