The latest Household Affordability Index has found that basic food items such as sugar beans, rice, flour and bread have seen price hikes of between 31 and 68%.
The index is conducted by the Economic Justice and Dignity Group and tracks food prices in 44 supermarkets and 30 butcheries, between September last year and January this year, in Johannesburg, Cape Town, Durban, and Springbok in the Northern Cape.
The group’s Mervyn Abrahams says a basket of 43 basic foods has now breached the level of a national minimum wage.
