The Durban Chamber of Commerce and Industry says the national lockdown has left a long trail of destruction on the business sector in the city, the province and the country at large.

The chamber’s CEO, Palesa Phili, says when the lockdown began last year, no one thought it was going to take as long as it has.

She says they have however tried to advocate for the provincial government to assist some of the sectors that were greatly affected, including the construction and tourism sector.

Last week, KwaZulu-Natal Premier Sihle Zikalala said  government has set aside R20 million to assist businesses that are currently on their knees due to the pandemic, during the State of the Province Address

Phili says unfortunately some businesses were unable to recover and jobs were lost.

She adds that it is therefore important for the chamber to offer a support structure and directions on what relief options are there to assist such businesses.
