Acting Minister in the Presidency, Khumbudzo Ntshavheni, has reassured opposition parties that Health minister, Zweli Mkhize, will not hinder the investigation into tender irregularities involving his department.
Mkhize is under investigation by the Special Investigating Unit after it was discovered that the Department’s appointment of communications company, Digital Vibes, led to irregular, fruitless and wasteful expenditure of R150 million.
Following these allegations, there has been mounting calls for the minister of health to resign from this post.
Briefing media on the outcomes of Cabinet’s meeting, Ntshavheni says it is not the position of Cabinet to express views on ongoing investigations, but Mkhize has assured them that he will be available for any queries into the matter.
On vaccine rollout, Ntshavheni has revealed that Cabinet is quite pleased with the process.
This comes following the announcement of a looming third wave of COVID-19 with the death toll having climbed to 56 077 since the pandemic started in South Africa.
According to the department of health, there has been a sharp spike of Coronavirus cases recorded in a period of 24 hours.
However, Ntshavheni says government is encouraged that over 2 million people have registered on it’s online system to be vaccinated .
