The South African Federation of Trade Unions (SAFTU) has reiterated its stance that Health minister Zweli Mkhize should be fired.
The trade union federation says Ramaphosa must demonstrate his commitment towards fighting and rooting out corruption by acting on the scandal involving the minister.
The president is facing growing pressure from opposition parties to make changes to his cabinet, following the Special Investigating Unit’s (SIU) Digital Vibes report.
The SIU outlined how the R150 million contract involving the department of health through the Digital Vibes was executed, describing a fraudulent scheme disguised as an ordinary communications services contract with the National Health Insurance system, amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
The SIU has filled a 90-page affidavit at the Special Tribunal as part of its bid to recover the money it claims was unlawfully paid to Digital Vibes, a company owned by Mkhize’s long-time spokesperson Tahera Mather and his former personal assistant Naadhira Mitha.
SAFTU’s General-Secretary, Zwelinzima Vavi, says failing to resolve this after many weeks confirms that president Cyril Ramaphosa is profoundly weak when it comes to addressing corruption.
