Police Minister Bheki Cele has raised concern that more areas in KZN have been deemed as high risk, following reports of violence, attacks on election candidates and political party intollerance.
Cele says the men and women in blue have a tough job ahead of them today to ensure that the local government elections are free and fair but most importantly safe for citizens.
The minister visited KwaZulu-Natal and Mpumalanga over the weekend to assess the readiness of the South African Police Services’ ability to ensure a safe election.
He says more attacks have been reported and most are linke to political violence.
Cele says these attacks are not only linked to one political party.
The minister adds that police officers have since been deployed in all voting stations and in and around strategic areas to ensure law and order prevails.
