Community Plagued with “Ukuthwalwa”

UThukela District Municipality Mayor, Alfred Mazibuko, says a number of communities in this area are still plagued by the problem of ukuthwalwa, which is the abduction of young women for cultural marriages.

Mazibuko has been speaking during a virtual address of the Woman’s Dialogue in Parliament, focusing KZN district municipalities.

He says there are many challenges faced by women in rural communities across the province, adding that under the UThukela District, they have a number of programmes that continue to counter these problems and help women in the process.

Mazibuko says the issue of Ukuthwalwa remains a thorn that is proving a challenge to root out.
