COVID-19 Committee Gives Update on Vaccine

South Africa’s Ministerial Advisory Committee on COVID-19, is considering a step by step approach to the roll-out of the AstraZeneca vaccine in the country.

This follows government’s decision to temporarily halt the vaccine roll-out process until further notice, after research showed it to be less effective against the new variant in SA.

Co-Chair of the Ministerial Advisory Committee, Professor Salim Abdool Karim says they need to consider the public first before moving ahead with the jabs.

Abdool Karim has been addressing a World Health Organisation briefing on COVID-19, updating the organisation on the country’s latest developments.

Abdool Karim, further says despite the temporary halt in the roll-out of the COVID-19 Vaccine in the country, not much time will be lost in what they planned from the onset.

Karim adds that while the AstraZenecca vaccine is on hold, another vaccine will be rolled out in its place while they are finalising their data on the matter.
