The Democratic Alliance (DA) says President Cyril Ramaphosa needs to apologise to South Africans for wasting taxpayers’ money on chartering a 300-seater intercontinental passenger aircraft to Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) at a cost of at least R1.6 million.
Ramaphosa led a South African delegation to the 42nd Ordinary Summit of the Southern African Development Community.
The Defence Department has confirmed that an amount of R1.6 million was paid to South African Airways (SAA).
It has also been confirmed that the president’s executive aircraft, Inkwazi, is currently out of commission.
The department says 14 passengers went to the DRC, and 55 were on the return flight.
DA Shadow Minister of Defence, Kobus Marais, says it is outrageous that SANDF would waste money it does not have in this way.
