Banyana Banyana coach Desiree Ellis believes that playing in the Turkish Womens Cup was “worthwhile” for South Africa as they concluded the tournament with a 1-1 draw against Slovenia on Tuesday afternoon. Slovenia struck early in the first half through Adrijana Mori as the Europeans came out of the blocks quickly to take a 1-0 lead to the Half-time break. WAFCON final hero Hilda Magaia scored the equalizer for South Africa midway into the second half, as both teams shared the spoils at full-time. Banyana Banyana ended the tournament with one win, a 3-0 drubbing of Uzbekistan in their tournament opener, and Tuesday’s draw against Slovenia. Banyana also received silverware from the Turkish Women’s Cup organizers for finishing as group A winners. This tournament served as Banyana Banyana’s preparation for the FIFA Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand in July and August this year.

Slovenia proved to be a tough and worthwhile opponent for South Africa as they got a taste of might come in this year’s global showpiece event. South Africa are in group G alongside Italy, Sweden and Argentina.
