ANC Deputy Secretary-General (DSG), Jessie Duarte, says the step aside policy was not established to punish members of the party.
Duarte says this speaking at the media briefing on the outcomes of the National Working Committee’s meeting, which was held on Monday.
She says the clause was made to protect the dignity and the integrity of the party and rule 25.70 requires maturity and understanding from the members who have been asked to step aside.

The DSG adds that this same rule, under which suspended Secretary General Ace Magashule was was elected under, does not have an appeal component.
She says this rule is the one that prevents and prohibits those members who’ve been asked to step aside from appealing the party’s decision.
