Umkhonto WeSizwe Party Member of Parliament, Duduzile Zuma Sambudla, is expected to appear at the Durban High Court this morning, facing charges related to the violent unrest that occurred in July 2021.
Zuma Sambudla is accused of inciting violence, looting, and encouraging widespread disruption following the arrest of her father, former President Jacob Zuma, for contempt of court. The unrest, which began in KwaZulu-Natal and spread to Gauteng, led to widespread looting, destruction of property, and loss of life, with estimates of over 350 deaths and billions of rands in damages.
The state has stated that it has a strong case against her and is fully prepared for trial. The charges stem from her alleged role in encouraging protests that spiralled into chaos, despite calls for calm from various political and community leaders.
Our reporter, Buhle Mbhele, is following the developments closely and will be reporting live from the Durban High Court.
