Educators Union Calls for School Closure amid Third Wave

The Educators Union of South Africa (EUSA) has given Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga an ultimatum of seven days to close schools or face backlash from their members.

Eusa says the vaccination of teachers is moving at a snail pace with mass vaccination only expected to begin on Wednesday.

It says COVID-19 numbers are growing at a fast past with some provinces already hit by the third wave, however the minister still refuses to close schools.

Meanwhile KZN Health MEC, Nomagugu Simelane says the closure of schools will result to an increase in COVID-19 cases.

Some opposition parties have also been seen calling for the complete closure of schools following the rise in Coronavirus cases.

Last week the National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD) announced that South Africa has technically entered the third wave of the Coronavirus pandemic.

Simelane says children being at home would mean not being under strict supervision during the day which may result to the spread of the virus.
