Lobby group AfriForum and trade union Solidarity have laid charges of defamation and conspiracy to incite violence against EFF leader Julius Malema at the Lyttelton police station in Pretoria.
This follows Malema’s statement telling party members not to hesitate to strike back when being assaulted by the police.
Solidarity says it’s been approached by more than 1 000 police officers who expressed their concern about the threatening statements Malema made recently against police.
Afriforum’s Ernst Roets believes if the police do not take the matter seriously, Malema will see it as confirmation that he is above the law.
Police Minister Bheki Cele has already gone on record as saying he believed Malema crossed the line.
