The eThekwini municipality is expected to resume its first council meeting today to elect a new mayor, after the meeting was disrupted on Monday by a mob of ANC supporters who broke into the venue and an electricity failure.

The council will also elect a deputy mayor and the executive committee.

During the meeting on Monday, opposition councillors had already started accusing ANC members of delaying proceeding by raising a range of points of order and calling for breaks.

This all followed the IFP’s abstinence when council voted for the speaker.

The party decided to join smaller parties in backing eThekwini’s DA caucus leader, Nicole Graham in the race for Mayor against the ANC’s Mxolisi Kaunda.

The IFP had initially agreed to support the ANC, but changed its tune when the ruling party failed to honour the same agreement during voting proceedings in other municipalities.

IFP KZN Chairperson Thami Ntuli explains.
