Expert Warns of a Destructive Third Wave

Renowned Epidemiology Professor Salim Abdool Karim says the COVID-19 third wave will be much worse in South Africa than the second wave, as a result of the Delta variant.
The variant, which was first identified in India, is present in more than 80 countries.
On Sunday, President Cyril Ramaphosa announced that the new variant has been identified in five provinces including KwaZulu-Natal, Gauteng, Eastern Cape, Free State and the Western Cape.
Speaking to the public broadcaster, Karim says when compared to other variants, the Delta ranges from 40% to 60% more transmissible.

Karim also explains that the Delta variant does escape natural immunity in some cases.
