Former Eskom CEO Brian Molefe has accused President Cyril Ramaphosa of using Glencore’s Optimum Coal mine to fund his own political agenda via Power Utility Eskom .

Molefe has been testifying at the Zondo commission of inquiry investigating state capture.

Detailing his opening statement Molefe says Optimum Coal mine owed Eskom billions of rands in penalties.

He says a de facto board that was outside the power utility was created as a war room, which then deputy president, Ramaphosa, was chair of.

” He was a de facto chairperson and had started playing this role directly from being chairperson of Optimum. When the deal was done in 2012 and he bought shares, he was made chairperson, 2014 he came deputy president. One would have expected corporate governance requires that there must be a cooling off period precisely for things like this.”

Molefe further testified that  the loadshedding came back after Ramaphosa was appointed as the President of the country.

He adds that the Guptas came here with a vison and that they were prepared to buy one of South African banks.
