Former South African Ambassador to the United States, Ebrahim Rasool, has stated that he has no regrets after being declared persona non grata and expelled from the US. Rasool, along with his wife, Rosieda, arrived at Cape Town International Airport yesterday following his removal from Washington.
Rasool’s expulsion came after remarks he made regarding the administration of former US President Donald Trump. The South African diplomat was critical of the policies and actions of Trump’s government, which led the US to declare him unwelcome.
In a statement upon his return, Rasool reaffirmed his stance on diplomatic relations, stating that South Africa would continue to practice the diplomacy of ubuntu, which emphasises mutual respect, interdependence, and the promotion of shared values and interests in its international relations.
Rasool’s remarks on the Trump administration had sparked controversy, and his expulsion was widely covered in international media. Despite the tensions, he remained steadfast in his belief that South Africa’s approach to diplomacy remains grounded in humanity and solidarity.
“Our diplomacy will always be guided by the principles of Ubuntu. We will continue to engage with the world based on values, shared interests, and a sense of mutual respect,” Rasool said.
The former ambassador also noted that South Africa’s international relationships should reflect a commitment to justice, peace, and equitable growth for all, rejecting diplomacy driven by power or exclusion.
