Gervonta Davis knocked out Ryan Garcia with a withering body shot in the seventh round of their eagerly awaited summit meeting.

Davis improved to 29-0, with all but two of his victories by knockdown. It was the first defeat for Garcia, who won 19 of his first 23 fights by KO. Garcia (23-1, 19 KOs) was game throughout and landed a series of single power shots to get Davis’ attention, was unable to beat the count following a sneaky counter left hand to the body.

In the seventh, it ended. During an exchange, Davis landed a short left to the liver. Garcia grimaced. He took a step back, he jabbed, he took another step back. Suddenly, he took a knee.

Davis has been one of boxing’s biggest attractions and he has drawn large crowds in New York, Atlanta and Los Angeles. He has collected highlight reel knockouts against Rolando Romero and Leo Santa Cruz. But critics have pointed to Davis’s thin resume and after defeating Garcia, Davis will have a lot fewer of them.
