Minister in the Presidency, Mondli Gungubele says COVID-19 vaccine hesitancy remains a major challenge in the country.
Gungubele has been briefing media on what is likely to be discussed at this week’s three-day cabinet Lekgotla meeting.
According to the 2021 Human Sciences Research Council’s survey, close to half of South Africans aged 18-24 are hesitant to take the COVID-19 jab.
The survey further revealed that, only 5% of respondents said social media or other rumours were the reason they did not want to get vaccinated, and an even smaller proportion said their reservations were because of religious beliefs.
As of today, more than 14 million people have at least taken one jab, with more than 6.9 million people fully vaccinated.
