Health Minister, Joe Phaahla, says there will be no travel restrictions imposed following the detection of the highly transmissible XBB.1.5 covid-19 sub-variant in the country recently.

The minister had been speaking at a media briefing of the government’s coronavirus command council, discussing the emergence of the new sub-variant of the disease today.

This new Omicron variant is described as very contagious, but not very dangerous, as South Africans have built up sufficient immunity since the start of the pandemic.

Phaahla says they do not expect it to cause much health disruption in the country.
