Health Minister Joe Phaahla says he expects the vaccination certificate to enable vaccinated people to access many opportunities which various service providers will be making available.

Phaahla has been briefing media on government’s management of the COVID-19 pandemic as well as South Africa’s vaccination rollout.

The health department launched the vaccination certificate today, in collaboration with the Centre for Scientific and Industrial Research.

The development of the digital COVID-19 vaccine certificate comes amid government’s move to ease lockdown restrictions and create a certifiable proof of vaccination.

Phaahla says they expect sports and recreation to open up more for vaccinated people, shops to provide discounts and others to give prizes.

Over 18 million vaccines have been administered to date, with over 13 million individual vaccinated.

Phaahla says the death rate has dropped by 51%, the infection rate dropped by 33%, and the positivity rate has declined from 5% to 3%.
