Transport MEC in KwaZulu-Natal, Sipho Hlomuka, has applauded the decision by the community of Nkandla, north of the province to call off the protests which had resulted in a shutdown of the town and major roads.
According to reports all roads are now open, learners and teachers are able to access schools and community members are able to use the local town.
Last week a violent public protest erupted, resulting in the shutting down of Nkandla town and the burning of properties, including a mobile clinic.
Hlomuka’s spokesperson, Thando Biyela, says although they welcome the decision to call off the protest however, they are monitoring the situation very closely and police deployments will continue in the area.
