The Department of Home Affairs has announced a significant upgrade to its digital verification system, aimed at enhancing efficiency for both the public and private sectors.

The system, which verifies identities using biometrics, previously faced a failure rate of up to 50%. The upgrade is designed to address this issue, improving accuracy and reliability in identity verification.

Minister Leon Schreiber highlighted that the upgrade will drastically reduce response times, making the process quicker and more seamless for users.

New fees for private sector use will come into effect from April, while public sector users will remain exempt from these charges.

Schreiber emphasised that this upgrade marks a crucial milestone in South Africa’s ongoing digital transformation, which is expected to streamline service delivery and enhance overall operational efficiency.
