The Democratic Alliance in the KwaDukuza Local Municipality North of Durban has called for urgent action against what it calls brazen illegal electricity connections.

The municipality’s 2021/2022 financial year shows that the city recorded a staggering R214 million in energy loss.

The party says it has written to the Executive Director of the Electrical Engineering unit, Sibusiso Jali requesting that the department secures infrastructure by deploying security patrols in hotspot areas and at strategic infrastructure in conjunction with Community Safety and within the allocated budget.

DA’s Privi Makhan says the municipality’s inability to deal with illegal connections is one of the compounding factors for the energy loss.
