The South African Communist Party (SACP) is calling government to consider making the Social Relief of Distress grant permanent, like other grants provided by the state.

The SACP says South Africans already living below the poverty line are backed up against the wall with rising unemployment, and an unstable economy.

The party held its Party’s plenary session over the weekend.

The SACP’s Alex Mashilo says the government introduced the SRD grant at the height of Covid-19 following public calls, adding that now more than ever, a permanent solution is needed when over 2.2 million jobs have been slashed.

He says if the R350 is made permanent for the unemployed, many families will be spared from harsh effects.
