The South African Medical Association says the government’s failure to prioritise the healthcare sector in its budgets over the years has led to the mass strike action negatively affecting patient care across the country.
Members affiliated to trade union Nehawu are calling for a 10 % salary increase and also a 2500 housing allowance.
The government has only tabled 4.7%.
Health Minister Joe Phaahla says that up to four people have died possibly due to the effects of the ongoing strike.
SAMA Chairperson Mvuyisi Mzukwa says they are aware of the challenges that the workers are facing as many healthcare workers died during the Covid 19 pandemic and also the high cost of living.
