IEC: ConCourt judgement will have implications for the electoral system

The Independent Electoral Commission says the ruling of the Constitutional Court declaring parts of the Electoral Act unconstitutional, will have implications for the current electoral system and the legislative framework governing national and provincial elections.
The judgement allows for independent candidates to stand for national and provincial elections.
IEC CEO, Sy Mamabolo, says they are ready to assist Parliament.

Meanwhile, politicians have welcomed the ConCourt judgement.
The People’s Dialogue founder, Herman Mashaba, says the judgment demonstrates the independence and importance of the judiciary.
One South Africa Movement leader, Mmusi Maimane, says the ruling is a step towards eradicating external influences and corruption within parties.
United Democratic Movement leader, Bantu Holomisa, says the ruling will strengthen the checks and balances of the electoral system.
