IEC Signs LGE Postponement Proclamation

Independent Electoral Commission Chairperson, Glen Mashinini, says he has signed papers to send to the Constitutional Court requesting a postponement of the Local Government Elections scheduled for the 27th October.

Mashinini has been briefing media, following the government’s official proclamation and gazetting of this date yesterday.

Last month, former Deputy Chief Justice Dikgang Moseneke recommended to the IEC that the election be delayed until no later than February next year due to COVID-19 and its impact on conducting an election campaign and voting.

Mashinini says municipal committees will for the time being continue with their work until more Councillors are elected.
