The Inkatha Freedom Party’s National Executive Committee says the deputy mayor of Abaqulusi municipality north of the province will act as Mayor following the suspension of the mayor.
The mayor was suspended from the party and directed to take leave from municipal duties with immediate effect following an audio clip where he was allegedly implicated in questionable statements.
In the audio clip, Mayor Mncedisi Maphisa is heard allegedly telling staff to fire an employee, he also allegedly makes sexual remarks about female workers in the municipality, reducing them to his sexual subjects.
The party has also suspended the councillor of Alfred Duma Municipality following another audio clip implicating him in a sex-for-jobs scandal.
One of the women who claimed to have had sex with the councillor for a job has laid charges of rape against him.
IFP national spokesperson Mkhuleko Hlengwa says the speaker of Alfred Duma Municipality has been directed to ensure that service delivery is not adversely impacted in the affected ward.
