African National Congress secretary General, Fikile Mbalula, says the planned national shutdown by the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) had the worst effect on small developing businesses and it was not in the interest of the economy.

Mbalula has slammed claims made by Julius Malema that the party’s shutdown on Monday was peaceful and successful.

Briefing the media on developments in the country, Mbalula says the intention behind the action was to shut down the economy of the country, but the EFF failed to rally the support to do so.

He confirmed the arrest of up to 530 people on attempts of what the ANC has labeled as anarchy.

Mbalula says because of the shutdown small businesses had to close and in the process operated at a loss.
