Defence lawyer in the Senzo Meyiwa murder trial, Advocate Malesela Teffo, has been released from detainment following his abrupt arrest at the High Court in Pretoria.
Teffo, who represents four of the accused in the Meyiwa trial, was arrested shortly after Judge Tshifhiwa Maumela adjourned court for the day on Thursday.
Commenting on the incident, Advocate Zandile Mshololo, representing a fifth accused, says Teffo was reportedly arrested for missing a court appearance in another matter.
Teffo was detained at the Hillbrow Police Station.
Reports suggest that Teffo’s arrest was conducted with a fraudulent warrant of arrest. Last year the City Press also reported that the advocate was arrested twice in a space of two weeks for contempt of court and for tresspassing and assault.
Police Minister Bheki Cele has since requested a full report from the National Commissioner on Teffo’s arrest, including the manner in which the arrest was conducted by the SAPS.
