The Gauteng High Court in Pretoria has ruled that the Department of Basic Education should publish the matric results on media platforms.

The judgement comes after civil society group AfriForum approached the court to oppose the department’s decision against publishing the results on newspapers, due to be released on Friday.

Last week, the department announced that matric results would no longer be published on public platforms, saying doing so would be in violation of the Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA).

Part of the order says the publication of results should not reflect the first names and surnames of the pupils. This means that the usual process of using the unique exam number remains.

High Court Judge Anthony Millar says not everyone has access to the internet.

Meanwhile, Afriforum’s legal representative Villie Spies says they will not allow the state to monopolise the system.
