Higher Education, Science and Innovation minister Blade Nzimande has flagged corruption at universities as one of the factors leading to unstable governance at these institutions.

In the latest incident, Eastern Cape premier, Oscar Mabuyane, has been implicated in the Special Investigating Unit’s probe into fraudulent admission and acquisition of qualifications by public officials at the University of Fort Hare.

The department’s spokesperson, Ishmael Mnisi, says the minister is considering several options including appointing an ombudsman to deal with corruption at higher learning institutions.
